What Beyoncé Taught Us About Black Beauty

Whilst it is true that access-all-areas interviews with the behemothic Beyoncé are as rare as a period of tranquility in the Trump administration, the idea that the enigmatic megastar rarely speaks is a fallacy. As we all know, Beyoncé’s mode of communication is her music. With the narrative dictated by her lyrics and visuals, she tells us her thoughts on feminism, on politics, on social justice, and, of course, on race. At a time where the world is beginning to wake up to the reality of racism and how it manifests in every crevice of society, Beyoncé’s lyrical odes to Black people have never felt more necessary. Packaged up within them is an important message about beauty – specifically, about Black beauty – and why we should be celebrating it.
